There was a time not so long ago when you go to a book shop, you find books only by foreign authors occupying 99% of the shelf. Most of us grew up reading Enid Blyton stories and we all know how teenager acts and behaves in a foreign land. But, we never knew what it was like to be a teenager in a nearby state or city. As a result we never went to the places mentioned in our books. We never got to taste the delicious foods that the fictional ones had.
But, now we can see a little change in the literary scenario. In a book shop, at least 15- 20% of the books are by Indian authors. But does the increase in the number of books mean increase in standard? No, but English is not our native language. And, indeed we should be proud that many are proficient in a foreign language.
But being proficient is not good if you are only going to talk about your love life at school or college and usually involves the same romantic plots. But, there are some authors who go beyond the routine to give us a masterpiece well beyond our expectations.
And some of it, we get to know.
I have compiled a collection solely based on the books I have read.
The Rozabal line by Ashwin Sanghi
It was Ashwin Sanghi's first book under the pseudonym Shawn Haigns. It was not a very famous book until his second book Chanakya's Chang came out. It was a different read even when you compare it with many foreign books. And one can gladly compare the author with Dan Brown.
The Glass Palace by Amitav Ghosh
Amitav Ghosh is one author whose books I read without asking for reviews. There are quite a few good ones and this one is my favourite.
The Muddy River by P.A Krishnan
Most books are miraculous discoveries and this book was one among it. It was written by an author who was not well known.
Chanakya's Chant by Ashwin Sanghi
It was like reading a periodical novel interlaced with a contemporary fiction. You will keep on reading and before you know, you would have completed reading it.
Marry Me Stranger by Novneel Chakraborty
Even though this is contemporary fiction, it was scary till the end and having read the second installment in it, I am waiting for the third part, which will shortly be released.
Life is what you make it by Preeti Shenoy
Life is what you make it is the second part by the author Preeti Shenoy and which shot her to fame. It deals with a psychiatric disorder and I had acquired the habit of gifting it to all my friends.
Midnight's Children by Salman Rushdie
Salman Rushdie may not be living here. But I have included him in the list of Indian authors because he is too good to leave it to some other country. And this book deals with children born at the stroke of midnight and it takes you for a ride.
The Bankster by Ravi Subramanian
If you love thrillers, you must try reading a book by this author. Apart from his latest book, all the other books have been thrillers related with banking.
The Immortals of Meluha by Amish Tripathi
We all would have read mythology books, but this book will deal with Godly characters in a different manner.
Sita - an illustrated retelling of Ramayana
This book tells you mythological stories from a wide perspective and you will like it if you are interested in knowing more. The other book, Jaya - An illustrated retelling of Mahabharata is also a good one.
