LIFE IS WHAT YOU MAKE IT. Blog Marathon #16

LIFE IS WHAT YOU MAKE IT
By Preeti Shenoy
-          A book review.

Some of the life’s delicacies come unexpected and one such delicacy which had a huge impact on how I see life was this book ‘Life is what you make it’ by Preeti Shenoy.
This was the second book by the author after her debut book ’34 Bubblegums and Candies’. It was a collection of short stories and I got that book immediately after this particular one.

This book ‘Life is what you make it’ was actually a gift from a good friend of mine who decided that I must read it. When I did not show the expected interest in buying it, it was ordered online for me and I must thank for the virtual pampering, because I got to have a wonderful book with me now.
This book deals with the story of Ankita Sharma. Life is all well for the beautiful young lady with her classes going good and her relationship with her boyfriend Abhi at its best. Life will show its harsh face only when you expect it to smile at your endeavours.

Ankita faces a similar situation and she copes up by herself in the beginning. But with no one to understand her situation, she keeps it all to herself until one fine day, everything goes wrong.
The rest of the story is about how she recovers herself and her lost life.
With alerts for spoilers, I am proceeding further.

The later part of the book deals with ‘Bipolar Disorder’. The term was popular after a movie released which was solely based on it. But the description of the feelings and the emotions of the person with the disease was portrayed well in the book. While reading it, you could feel the chillness passing through you. You could feel the pain of the character and you will want to get inside the book and do something for the character.
Some of our life’s decisions will not affect us immediately, but wait for the right moment to appear and the appearances seldom lead to happy endings in case of worst decisions. Here, the main protagonist must deal with her choices and how it haunts her.

Towards the end, the character fights back and finally we are relieved. The book was one emotional roller coaster. It will affect you unknowingly.
Mental disease is something, which remains a taboo in India. Many prefer to hide it rather than take treatment for it. If a person gets a viral or bacterial infection, he is not ashamed of it. But, when he is suffering from a mental disease, he refuses to accept it, and doesn’t even acknowledge it as a disease. And persons suffering from mental diseases are left to their own and seldom taken care of.
After reading this novel, and as a health professional, I wanted to create awareness regarding mental health and to remove the taboo from it forever. I would like to dream of a day when people suffering from it are treated with respect and given some understanding of the nature of their disease.
