Foe to Friend!

Life is such a crazy ride. You go up a little and the downward spiral might be deeper than you have ever thought. It never gives what you wanted and what you have is not always yours.

Amid the chaos, while trying to steer a path for yourselves, you will meet some persons, who will act as a beacon of light to clear the grounds.

Some light up the way, and some accompany you, until you finally reach the destination. And some of the rarer form among them, will give you the light of hope you have always wanted.
Those people are one in a million, and, I am really happy to have met such a person.

We all have some funny incidents and eternal memories from our childhood. And most of it would have happened in our lovely school, where our greatest worry would be completing the home work everyday.

If someone had to ask me about who dominated my school life, my answer would mostly involve one person. The person who remains my greatest enemy till date, and, that person is the one who is undeniably made of great.

You might wonder whether I am going to talk about my enemy. Yes! Absolutely! I am going to talk about my enemy here!

"Know your enemy and know yourself, and you can fight hundred battles without a disaster" - Sun Tzu

School was the place where I stood first in everything. Our school had the practice of shuffling the students once in two years.

And I met him for the first time in my class 7.

It was sworn enemity at first sight.

But I later realised that, it was mixed with innocence. We were actually competing against each other for the position of the class topper.

We never talked to each other.
We never looked at each other.

We were the commander in generals of the opposite teams in the battlefield and the days passed with studying hard, harder and the hardest.

So, how does it make him great?

I am coming to it, but readers be warned, I might take my time.

After two years were over, we were in different schools in different places and never met again.

Years passed by, and, a person named Mark Zuckerberg co-created the Facebook, and the social networking was blooming, like the little rosy bud against the harsh snow.

It had many options to make a person lose half of his time, and, sometimes half of his sanity.

One day, on random clicking of 'likes', I saw his profile in the list of people I might know. Soon we became friends on Facebook.

We started with little chats and it soon progressed to wonderful interrogative sessions. And one fine day, we had become the best of friends!

Irony is such a sweet thing. Isn't it?

So, does being my best friend makes him great? I would love to say 'yes' to this very particular question, but as I do not like to brag about myself in public, I am going to give some valid reasons to prove it.

A best friend is someone who understands you even before you say something. He is someone like that. I don't have to worry about saying my worries to him,and about it being spread.

Trust is something which develops on its own, though some people try to nurture it out, when they haven't even sown the required seed for it.

Because of the trust I have in him, I never worry about saying anything to him. I don't have to fret about wasting his time. He finds time to calm my nerves and when I am lacking confidence, he gives the boost I need.

He not only does that for me, he does it for everyone. He is like a volunteer to cheer up everyone and, never ever have a negative thought entered his mind.

I used to call him 'the eternal optimist'.

On seeing him, I used to wonder a lot. How can a person stand tall with confidence even if he is facing a very tough situation!

The optimism in him is alone to make him gain other qualities, and by being the natural hard worker, he is taking his path towards success.

I have met many people in my life, who acted to be my friend and some people turned out to be traitors (yes! They do exist!) And some were so egocentrical, that even being a friend was a useless work for them.

So, in this wonderful world, full of such cowardly souls, I was lucky to have gained such a good friend.

Friendship is something which depends entirely on the persons involved. And by being the best friend ever, my arch enemy left me a lasting impression about life.

If not for him, we would have remained best 'enemies' ever and I am glad to accept that! My ego would have never allowed me to go beyond the casual 'hi' and 'bye', and he taught me to be friendly with everyone.

Whenever I lament anything about anyone, which I do a lot, he will tell me to think from their point of view and will say something, which is his usual saying, 'Everything that happens is for good'

Life is not an easy thing and sometimes when the path seems too narrow, take the road and do not be afraid to follow the light from the distant tower, guiding you in the correct way! I am glad to have a pure light guiding me in my way!
